Six Things You Should Know

Equity Markets –  were up this week with U.S. stocks (S&P 500) rallying +3.51% while international stocks (EAFE) .rose +2.81%
Fixed Income Markets – were also up this week with investment grade bonds (AGG) gaining +0.35% and high yield bonds (JNK) adding +0.38%
Jobs Report – Nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000 in July with an additional 103,000 of downward revisions from prior months bringing not job declines to 126,000. Despite the weakness, overall unemployment levels fell to 4.1% from 4.3% due to a 264,000 drop to the labor force.
U.S. Iran Update – The U.S. has paused new strikes while Washington and Tehran pursue a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and potentially end the five-month war. Both sides say an agreement is close, but disputes over Iranian control of shipping lanes—and continued regional attacks—leave the ceasefire fragile.
Cybersecurity Reminder – Scammers are increasingly using Remote Access Tools (RATs) along with phishing emails or texts to take control of devices like phones, tablets, and computers. Once installed, these tools can give cybercriminals access to sensitive information, including your Schwab accounts. These attacks can be hard to spot, so if something doesn’t feel right- like unusual account activity or suspicious messages- trust your instincts. If you sense suspicious activity, please call us immediately or report any concerns to Schwab at 800-515-2157.

Data, Just the Data

U.S. ISM Manufacturing Index – rose to 55.6 in July, beating expectations and reaching the highest level for factory activity since May 2022. Cost pressures eased while output expansion accelerated at its fastest rate since November 2021.

U.S. Jobless Claims – initial claims slightly rose by 1,000 last week to 199,000, remaining near the previous week’s 57-year low. Continuing claims ticked higher by 24,000 to 1,801,000, remaining well under long-term averages.

Eurozone Retail Sales – shrank 0.3% in June despite expectations for improvement. Year over year sales are now up just 0.7%, the smallest gain since July 2024.

U.K. Manufacturing PMI – slowed to a reading of 51.9 in July but remaining in expansionary territory for the 4^th consecutive month.
