You Don’t Need to Be Superman
(edited transcript) … Who are you more like, Superman or a bridge builder? What I mean by that is I think when it comes to investing, people put a pressure on themselves of perfection, of superhuman abilities. And they just want to, if you think of the old stock chart bouncing up and down, they just want to fly from peak to peak to peak. Never have to deal with any of the valleys. To some degree, of course, you’re going to deal with the valley. If for nothing else, then you’re going to have to have friends talk about it, the news talks about it. Yeah, maybe look at a monthly statement. However, you can build a bridge from peak to peak. And what I mean by that is not that you can avoid any kind of volatility within a portfolio. What I mean is from goal, to goal, to goal that you may have within your portfolio with the right forms of diversification, which just really means that if we’re in the middle of a bad market, something unexpected happens in your life where you need cash, and you don’t want to have to sell things when they’re 50% off, a good portfolio will have something that’s held up. Or cash flow. “Hey, I don’t need to sell anything. I just live off all of the cash that my account generates for me, regardless of market conditions.” Those kinds of things, again, can help bridge those periods of volatility, both emotionally and financially, to help you again stay the course to eventually get that return, that the market’s going to bear.
